Artist’s Statement

“Painting is an endlessly fascinating (and frustrating) way to untangle myself. I paint with curiosity; exploring emotion and life through colour and brushstroke, seeking to create compositions that simultaneously burst with joy while listening to the peaceful whispers of shadow. I look to nature for inspiration but look within for the work, the play, the love of it all. There’s a levity and liveliness to my paintings – a sense of wonder tinted with a sweep of humour. I admire the unusual, celebrate the weird, tread quietly and lightly in this world, and am leaving a bold, colourful trail of work behind.”

Having tortured myself this past weekend over a huge painting (that is now in the ever-growing ugly pile) I've realised that when I'm uncertain with my work, I need to start small. Or at least not huge right from the jump. Working out ideas and colours and composition on a less intimidating scale is a great place to begin.
*
Small can be just as beautiful, even more so at times. Some of my favorite paintings ever, like this sweet breezy breath of air, are giants in my heart.
*
The journey continues.....

I've spent the past couple of days noodle-ing around with colours and ideas, listening and watching and hoping to connect with some sense of direction forward with my landscapes. Can't say I've made much headway but I do have an impressive pile of rejects by my side.
*
Have to be honest, I've been struggling with this for a while, and it's a difficult stage to work through.
*
Having said that, I truly believe, for me, the knowingness and progress comes through during the process of painting itself so ... I paint on.
*
I paint through the uglies, the too-muches and the not-enoughs, the trying-too-hards, the over-dones, the borings, the 'that's not me' and the just plain Nopes. Every once in a while I see a maybe (only to realise it's a nope the next morning). How can I LOVE the process so much but hate the result?
*
Anyhoodle, at least I know by now that it's just paint and I can always start again. And that's where you find me here today, super early at the studio beginning again 🀞

How's this for a thrilling post? Freshly gessoed white canvases on a freshly painted white wall. Man, I'm setting a new level of excitement with this.
*
But to me, there actually IS a tingle of excitement, of something about to happen floating through the studio right now because all these canvases are destined for greatness ( HAHAHA 🀞 you know what i mean).
*
Each one represents the potential for something I haven't seen before, explorations of places I haven't been before, feelings I haven't tapped into before. Ideas and questions and curiosities all tangled up in my imagination and at the ready for each one of these canvases. It's going to be a fun and full summer focused on these paintings.
*
So, enough talking the talk - it's time to walk the walk and hop to it huh? I gots work to do!!

After a bit of a pause, some time gathering inspiration and ideas, and refreshing my confidence, I'm feeling my heart and imagination being pulled in the direction of land and sky again.
*
As much as I'm led by intuition and emotion, there's also an intellectual component to my work that has to be in place - I need to know in my brain what it is I'm wanting to explore, express, reveal about the way I see the world. I simply have to know what it is I'm looking for on every level.
*
I need that piece of the whole process to be in place in order for me to really connect to, and let go into, what's happening on the canvas.
*
I think (I certainly hope!!) I know now and am ready to go. New landscapes ahead ! 🩷
*
*
πŸ“Έ Grateful for friends like @alinardo who share their beautiful photos with me. thank you!

Hello darkness πŸ’™
*
Many of the paintings in my last landscape collection went darker than I initially expected. As I painted, I found deeper, darker colours a more expressive way of exploring shape and flow and shadow of the wind.
*
Speckled with tiny distant stars, this thickly painted night sky is a favourite of mine, perhaps because I know the journey from light to dark, and also trust that light on the horizon. πŸ’™

If you have an extra minute, I have a little story about kindness that floated to the top of my memory on my morning walk...
*
For many summers I taught sailing on Toronto Island, and every morning I'd ride my bike 25km from the west end where we lived, to the ferry docks on the other side of the city.
*
Hit a pothole one day, tire burst, probably cried a bit because I'm a wimp who can't fix a flat πŸ˜„, started walking my bike the rest of the way, frustrated and knowing I'd be way late.
*
Within minutes, a random guy stopped me, said he lived nearby and could help. TBH, I'm not sure I really even thought mugging vs. murder vs helper? Do I follow (kind of a cute) guy up a deserted downtown side street at 7am?
*
Well, as someone who chooses to believe in the good in the world ...of course I did, and you know what?
*
He didn't just fix my tire, or put a spare wheel on. Nope, he took mine up the stairs into the coolest warehouse loft I've ever been in and said he'd have mine fixed for me by the end of the day.... then he handed over his own beautiful road bike and just said," ride safe, come back around 6pm and I'll have yours ready for you". I couldn't (still can't) believe his casual, open-hearted kindness as I pedalled off, but true to his word, there it was, tire fixes, gears oiled, brakes tightened, ready for me at 6pm.
*
He didn't want money or anything more than a Thank you. I don't even know his name and I never saw him again even though I rode that route for the rest of the summer, hoping to at least wave to my new friend. I stuck a note to the outside door the next morning with a movie pass inside, but I don't know if he ever got it.
*
To this day it's one of the most random acts of kindness I've ever experienced and even though it was probably 35yrs ago, I'm still so in awe of that moment, his generosity, his trust ... his ability to fix a tire.
*
I think of that morning often, hope life has treated him well, wish he knew how grateful I still am! and know now how one act of kindness and a little bit of trust can truly change a life.
